Selling on e-commerce marketplaces like Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho can look lucrative on the surface, but marketplace deductions quickly eat into gross margins. A product bought for ₹250 and sold for ₹799 doesn't give you ₹549 in profit — after referral commission, closing fees, payment collection charges, shipping, and 18% GST on all marketplace service charges, the actual bank settlement is often under ₹400.

This calculator compares your real in-hand profit across Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho side-by-side for any selling price or category. You can also switch to 'Target Profit' mode to work out the exact selling price needed to hit a specific net income after all platform deductions and return losses.

Why RTO (Return to Origin) destroys paper margins

In Indian e-commerce, Cash on Delivery (COD) orders frequently result in Customer Returns or Return-to-Origin (RTO). On non-delivered returns, you earn zero selling revenue, but you still lose the forward courier fee, reverse courier fee, and the packaging box or polybag.

If your category has a 15% return rate, every 10 successful sales have to subsidize the courier losses of 1 to 2 returned parcels. Factoring an estimated return rate into your initial pricing calculation protects your working capital from hidden logistics bleed.

Steps to price your product for profitable selling

  1. Determine your accurate Cost of Goods Sold (COGS), including raw material, wholesale price, inward transport, and product GST.
  2. Add protective packaging cost: bubble wrap, corrugated box or courier bag, thermal label, and tape (typically ₹15 - ₹30).
  3. Select your product category to automatically load the specific marketplace commission percentage.
  4. Review the Net Bank Settlement amount and check if your margin leaves enough headroom for marketing (ACOS) or sponsored ads.
  5. Use the 'Target Profit' toggle if you need a guaranteed rupee return per unit, and compare whether Amazon or Meesho lets you list at a more competitive price.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Meesho's commission 0%?
Meesho pioneered a zero-commission model to attract manufacturers and regional sellers. Instead of charging referral fees, Meesho monetizes through seller advertising, express shipping upsells, and supplier catalog tools.
Is 18% GST charged on the product price or the marketplace fee?
The 18% GST shown in marketplace deductions is charged strictly on the service fees the platform bills you (commission, shipping, closing). The GST on your physical product is collected by you from the buyer and remitted directly via your monthly GSTR-3B filings.
What is the difference between Amazon Easy Ship and FBA?
With Easy Ship, you store and pack inventory in your own warehouse while Amazon courier picks it up from your doorstep. With FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon), Amazon stores your inventory in their fulfillment center, handles packing and customer service, but charges an extra pick-and-pack fee and monthly storage fees.
How does Flipkart's collection fee work?
Flipkart charges approximately 2% on prepaid orders or a flat fee on cash transactions to cover banking gateway and payment processing costs. Amazon folds payment processing into its closing fee structure.
Can I sell the same product at different prices on Amazon and Meesho?
Yes. Many sellers list at higher prices on Amazon or Flipkart to absorb referral commissions, while offering a lower price on Meesho where 0% fees allow for aggressive discounting without sacrificing margin.
