Instagram displays feed images at 1080 pixels wide. Uploading larger doesn't add sharpness — the app downscales it anyway — so 1080 wide is the size to export at.
Fit or fill?
- Fit keeps the entire photo visible and adds bars around it. Use it for group shots, text-heavy graphics, screenshots and anything where the edges matter.
- A blurred background is the least noticeable way to fill the bars — it picks up the photo's own colours, so the frame looks intentional rather than letterboxed.
- White borders suit a clean, gallery-style feed; black works well for night shots and moody photography.
- Fill crops the photo to cover the whole frame. It looks most native in the feed, but only when the subject sits comfortably inside the new shape.
- Portrait 4:5 takes up the most vertical space in the feed, which tends to earn more attention than a square or landscape post.
Getting a sharp upload
- Start with the original photo, not a screenshot or a copy downloaded from a messaging app — those are already compressed.
- Pick the format you'll post as, then choose fit or fill.
- Download the JPEG. It's exported at exactly the size Instagram expects, so the app won't rescale or crop it again.
- Upload it and, if Instagram offers a crop, leave it at the original shape.

- Choose 'Fit whole photo', pick a background, and download. The entire image is placed inside an Instagram-shaped frame, so nothing is cut off when you upload it.
- Why does my photo look blurry after uploading to Instagram?
- Usually because it was much larger or smaller than 1080 pixels wide, or the wrong shape, so Instagram rescaled and recompressed it. Exporting at the exact size avoids most of that extra processing.
