Text Line Toolkit
Sort lines, remove duplicates, number them, and top and tail every line.
Sort
A set of everyday text operations in one place: count words and characters, remove duplicate or empty lines, sort alphabetically or numerically, trim whitespace, reverse lines, and strip formatting — the small clean-up jobs that otherwise mean opening a spreadsheet or writing a throwaway script.
Everything runs in your browser as you type, so lists containing names, addresses or anything else sensitive never leave your device.
What each operation is for
| Operation | Typical use |
|---|---|
| Remove duplicates | Deduplicating an email or ID list before an import |
| Remove empty lines | Cleaning up a copy-paste from a PDF or web page |
| Sort A–Z / Z–A | Making a long list scannable or comparable |
| Trim whitespace | Fixing trailing spaces that break exact-match lookups |
| Reverse lines | Flipping a chronological log to newest-first |
| Change case | Normalising inconsistently capitalised data |
| Strip formatting | Removing invisible styling from pasted rich text |
Invisible characters cause most 'why doesn't this match' bugs
- Trailing spaces are the usual culprit in failed lookups — the values look identical because the difference is invisible.
- Non-breaking spaces (U+00A0) come in from web pages and Word, and are not the same character as a normal space.
- Smart quotes (“ ” ‘ ’) get substituted automatically by word processors and break code and CSV parsing.
- Zero-width characters can survive a copy-paste from some websites and are entirely invisible.
- Mixed line endings (CRLF vs LF) make files look identical while diffing as completely changed.
- Trimming and stripping formatting clears most of these in one pass.
Frequently asked questions
- Does removing duplicates preserve the original order?
- Yes — the first occurrence of each line is kept in place and later repeats are removed, so the order you pasted is preserved.
- Is sorting case-sensitive?
- Plain alphabetical sorting places uppercase before lowercase, so 'Zebra' can come before 'apple'. Convert to a single case first if you want a purely alphabetical order.
- Why do my lines still not match after trimming?
- Most likely a non-breaking space or a zero-width character rather than a normal space. Strip formatting as well as trimming, which removes the characters a trim won't catch.
- Can it handle a large list?
- Yes, comfortably into tens of thousands of lines. Very large inputs depend on your device's memory, since all the processing happens locally.
- Is my text uploaded anywhere?
- No. Every operation runs in your browser, so lists of names, emails or other personal data stay on your machine.
