Where the text comes from
The passage is a scrambled extract from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC. The familiar opening 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet' is a fragment of 'dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet' — 'there is no one who loves pain itself'.
It entered typography in the 1500s when a printer scrambled a galley of type to make a specimen book, and it survived into digital design through Letraset sheets in the 1960s and then desktop publishing software in the 1980s.
When placeholder text helps and when it hurts
- It helps when you're evaluating typography, line length, rhythm and spacing without being distracted by what the words say.
- It hurts when you're evaluating whether a design works, because real content is never as tidy as lorem ipsum. Real headlines run to three lines; real names are sometimes 40 characters long.
- Latin's word-length distribution differs from English, so line breaks and hyphenation behave differently from the finished article.
- It is useless for testing internationalisation. Test with German for length, Arabic for right-to-left, and CJK for line-breaking behaviour.
- The most common design failure it conceals is an empty state — what the page looks like with no content at all.
- Never ship it. 'Lorem ipsum' appearing on a live site is a recurring and entirely avoidable embarrassment.
