Random Name Generator
Generate random names for people, usernames, or teams — one or a hundred at a time.
Generate random names for people, usernames, or team names — one at a time or a hundred at once — useful for filling out test data, seeding a database, running a raffle, or just brainstorming.
Filter by category (like first names, full names, or team names) to get results relevant to what you're actually building.
Test data that finds real bugs
The usual test fixtures — John Smith, Jane Doe — pass every time, which is precisely the problem. Names are one of the most consistently mishandled data types in software, and realistic variety surfaces the failures early.
- Names with apostrophes (O'Brien) break naive SQL and unescaped output. They are also a classic injection test.
- Accented and non-Latin characters catch encoding bugs that only appear once data reaches a database with the wrong collation.
- Very long names overflow fixed-width layouts and hit column length limits.
- Single-word names are real and common in several cultures, so a required 'last name' field is a genuine bug.
- Not everyone has a middle name, and some people have several.
- Never assume order. Family name first is the norm across much of East Asia.
Using generated names responsibly
Generated names are drawn from common real-world name lists, which means any given output almost certainly belongs to a real person somewhere. That's fine for seeding a test database and not fine for anything that implies a real individual.
Don't use them to create fake reviews, fake testimonials, fake social profiles, or any content presented as coming from a real person. Reserve them for test fixtures, demo data, raffles and placeholder content that's clearly labelled as such.
Frequently asked questions
- Are these real names or made up?
- Names are drawn from common real-world name lists, so they read as plausible real names rather than obviously fake placeholders — useful for realistic test data.
- Can I generate a large batch of names at once?
- Yes — set the count to generate anywhere from one name up to a large batch in a single click, and export the list.
- Can this generate usernames instead of full names?
- Yes — switch to the username mode for shorter, handle-style names suitable for test accounts or placeholder profiles.
- Could a generated name match a real person?
- Almost certainly, since the lists are built from common real names. That's fine for test data, but don't attach generated names to reviews, testimonials or profiles presented as real people.
- Why should test data include awkward names?
- Because real users have them. Apostrophes, accents, single-word names and very long names routinely break software that was only ever tested with 'John Smith'.
