Enter a bill total and a tip percentage to see the tip amount and the grand total, then split it evenly across any number of people — handy at a restaurant table when nobody wants to do the mental maths.

Common tip percentages are one tap away, but you can enter any custom percentage if the default presets don't match local norms.

Tipping norms vary enormously by country

CountryTypical restaurant tipNotes
United States18–22%Effectively expected; staff wages assume it.
Canada15–20%Similar to the US.
United Kingdom10–12.5%Often already added as a service charge.
France / Italy / SpainRound up, or 5%Service is usually included.
JapanNoneTipping can be considered impolite.
India5–10%Common in restaurants, not expected in cafés.
Australia / New ZealandNone to 10%Optional; staff are paid a full wage.

Check the bill for an existing service charge before adding a tip — double-tipping is easy to do in the UK and much of Europe.

Splitting a bill that isn't even

  1. Calculate the tip on the full bill first, so the percentage is right regardless of how you divide it.
  2. For an even split, divide the grand total by the number of people — the tool does this for you.
  3. For an uneven split, work out each person's share of the pre-tip subtotal as a percentage, then apply that same percentage to the grand total.
  4. Round each person's share up to the nearest small unit; the remainder covers the cent or two that even division leaves behind.

Frequently asked questions

Should tip be calculated before or after tax?
Etiquette varies by region, but tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the more common convention. Enter whichever total matches local practice.
How does the bill-splitting handle rounding?
The per-person total divides the tip and bill evenly; if the result doesn't divide cleanly to the cent, round up slightly on one person's share.
What's a typical tip percentage?
Common tip percentages range from 10% to 20% depending on country and service, with 15–20% typical in the US and lower or no tipping common elsewhere.
The bill already has a service charge — do I still tip?
Usually not. A service charge is a tip that has already been added, and tipping again on top duplicates it. If service was exceptional, a small additional amount is a personal choice.
How do I tip on a discounted or comped bill?
Tip on what the bill would have been before the discount. The staff did the same work whether or not you used a voucher.
